Dr. Juliet Kyayesimira

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda.

She researched on post-harvest handling practices that influence the Physico-chemical properties and microbial status of beef in the meat value chain in Uganda. The research was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development under the Reduction of Postharvest Losses and Value Addition in East African Food Value Chains Project (RELOAD project). She also holds a Master of Science in Biology degree (Natural Resource, Ecology & Conservation) and a Bachelor’s degree in science Education both from Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Other previous areas of research are on restoration potential of degraded areas, ethnobotany and water and sanitation. Besides that, she teaches at Kyambogo University, Kampala Uganda.

Besides CIRCODU research interests which she upholds including energy, health and environment conservation, her other interests include Agriculture and food safety, water and sanitation, biodiversity and ecology and ethnobotany.

Monitoring and Evalutation
CIRCODU has, since its inception, been engaged in monitoring for clean indoor air pollution and promoting greener technologies, particularly, improved household and institutional wood/charcoal cook stoves which are aimed at reducing indoor air pollution and fuel consumption.
Cook Stove and Fuel Testing
CIRCODU is now a regional Knowledge and testing center for East Africa supported by the Global Alliance for clean cook stoves. Under this grant, CIRCODU has been provided with equipment and training to enhance its capacity to do field testing for cook stoves. In addition to these CIRCODU is heavily involved in emission tests, durability tests, water consumption tests and lots of research.
Research and Consultancy
Working with the local and international partners, CIRCODU has been engaged in performing several studies like Kitchen Performance Tests (KPTs) and Kitchen Surveys on fuel saving stoves
We also provide expertise in reviewing standards and quality guidelines for products and services in the renewable energy sector.

Besides the energy component, CIRCODU has continuously expanded the scope of its work by engaging into research in sustainable agriculture. In this department we have focused more on the technologies used for the conversion of animal waste to biogas, by increasing knowledge about domestic biogas to maximize effectiveness, quality and service delivery of the biogas programs. We have helped development agencies who promote biogas use to build business cases for household biogas users/biogas construction companies considering the benefits of bio-slurry as a fertilizer which boosts agricultural yield and also energy savings through use of biogas.

With partners, CIRCODU has also been engaged carrying out studies in wetland restoration in Uganda; coming up with a detailed design of the small-scale water storage and detention facilities, detailed plan for silt traps drainage, flood control and maximum water recuperation.
Training
Alongside other projects, the organization has also strengthened its capacity to provide trainings. Much focus has been in facilitating community trainings in production of alternative clean energy sources for cooking and income generation like bio-briquettes.
